In October 2023, the Welsh Government decided it no longer wanted to fund the Bwcabus public bus transport service, and the service was brought to an end without notice. As a result, many residents in the county who were completely dependent on the Bwcabus had no way to get to medical appointments, some were left without means to shop, some unable to travel to work, and many were isolated and had no means to socialise at all.
The Bwcabus was originally started as an 'on demand' service to serve parts of the south of the county that did not have a bus service, to create links to other main public services. But it was very popular, and gradually turned into a more regular service.
After holding a public meeting in Llandysul with users and supporters of the Bwcabus to hear their response, it was clear to Elin that there was a need to try and find a more sustainable solution, and she started discussing an idea with the Dolen Teifi foundation, a Llandysul-based community transport company already carrying out similar work.
A possible solution was reached, and Elin was able to present the proposal to the Welsh Government's Transport Minister. Sufficient funding was secured to carry out a pilot scheme of a new community bus service.
The pilot project
Dolen Teifi has managed to secure two minibuses, 17 seats each for the service. There is one bus for Lampeter and the area, and hopefully the second bus will serve the wards of Llandysul, Llandyfriog, Beulah and Llangoedmor. Community groups can also hire the bus in the evenings and weekends.
During October, public meetings were held for those who wanted to hear more about the new scheme, to identify groups within the community who would be able to lead on providing the service, and plan trips that would be of use to residents of the community.
