Ceredigion farmers and Plaid Cymru raise debate on Inheritance Tax

Ceredigion members of the NFU visited the Senedd on Wednesday to hear the Plaid Cymru debate urging Senedd Members to support a Plaid Cymru motion calling for the policy to be reconsidered.

Following the debate, highlighting the devastating impact that the UK Government’s Inheritance Tax changes will have on farming families in Wales, the motion was narrowly defeated. But Members did vote to support that Welsh Government Ministers should continue to advocate for Welsh farmers, ensuring their views are heard in Westminster.

Elin Jones MS said: "I’m so glad that Plaid Cymru was able to bring this debate to the Senedd. In Ceredigion we have a large farming community, and we know of many that are concerned and will be affected by the UK Government’s Inheritance Tax scheme.

As Llyr ap Gruffydd AS and other Members speaking in the debate highlighted, our farmers live on very tight budgets and have limited cash flow. The land, and business and equipment are their assets and farmers are merely custodians of these assets. They always pass them on to their next generation. To saddle the next generation with large inheritance tax bills will risk the viability of many of our farms. To safeguard our farming sector, our Welsh language and our rural way of life, we must be review this family farm tax.”
