On Friday (16 February) Ben Lake MP visited the new base of Papyrus on the campus of Aberystwyth University. PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is a UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people. The national charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is expanding and now has four offices across Wales: in Cardiff, Carmarthen, Conwy and Aberystwyth.
David Heald, PAPYRUS’ Area Manager for Wales, said:
“We were delighted to welcome Ben Lake MP to our new base on the campus of Aberystwyth University, where he heard at firsthand how we are working to give hope to children and young people who are struggling with life.
“Suicide is the biggest killer of young people under the age of 35 in the UK and every year we lose around 200 teenagers to suicide. Behind every one of those tragic statistics is a family left utterly devastated, searching for a question that will never be answered, why us?
“At PAPYRUS we believe many suicides can be prevented. Although we are a national charity we want to be as local as we can be, working together in the heart of our communities to save young lives.”

“It was a pleasure to visit the Papyrus team at their new base in Aberystwyth. The work done by the charity both nationally and locally is remarkable and can truly have life-changing effects on individuals and families.
“The fact that suicide is the biggest killer of young people under 35 in the UK is staggering, but I am extremely grateful to Papyrus for their continued dedication to the cause. I am also pleased that the charity decided to set up their new base in Aberystwyth, providing Ceredigion’s young people, especially students, with practical help and hope for the future, right on their doorstep.”
