Supporting a protest to save Lampeter campus

A number of protesters gathered on the steps of the Senedd with Elin Jones MS and Cefin Campbell MS, to call on the Welsh Government to work with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (PCDDS) to safeguard the future of their Lampeter campus.

In December, the University announced that it was considering ending undergraduate teaching on the Lampeter campus at the end of the academic year. There has been a university in Lampeter for over 200 years, and the University was a crucial part of the establishment of the University of Wales.

Elin Jones MS said: "Since the University announced that it was considering bringing undergraduate teaching at the Lampeter campus to an end, myself and Ben Lake MP have been in discussions with the Vice Chancellor. I understand that they are in a difficult position as an institution, but they really need to find a way to protect undergraduate teaching in Lampeter, or at least ensure that the campus is used suitably; for the sake of the town and the University. The University is a central part of Lampeter town, and the prosperity of the town and the University have depended on each other for many years.

I've already called on the Government to work with the University to consider other ways of moving forward, and to ensure that the campus can be protected. So far, the response has not been helpful, and I was pleased to take part in yesterday's protest, which will hopefully encourage Government Ministers to reconsider their response to the situation. I’ve also asked the University to organise a public meeting in Lampeter as soon as possible, to discuss the future of the campus."
