I’ve had many conversations on the doorstep with the residents of Bow Street, Llangorwen, Dole, and Clarach about various issues, but as the colder months approach, the UK Government’s decision to cut the Winter Fuel Payment stands out as a major concern. This cut will affect 540,000 pensioners across Wales, many just above the Pension Credit threshold, who will struggle to heat their homes as energy bills continue to rise.
If elected as the Councillor for Tirymynach, I would work with fellow Councillors and Plaid Cymru representatives, to ensure that the concerns of residents are heard, and to urge the UK Government to restore the Winter Fuel Payment. The eligibility criteria for the Winter Fuel Payment must be reconsidered—excluding pensioners who just miss out on Pension Credit ignores those who still face the same rising costs. More equitable solutions, like raising the age at which pensioners can claim, could ensure that the most vulnerable continue to receive support. Cutting the Winter Fuel Payment will only exacerbate pressure on the already struggling NHS, as more vulnerable people, unable to adequately heat their homes, are likely to fall ill, increasing hospital admissions and demand for healthcare services.
Scrapping the Winter Fuel Payment is just one example of a broader issue. Further cuts—whether to public services or people’s incomes—won’t fix anything. Instead, we need genuine investment in our communities to allow them to thrive. The UK Labour Government must rethink its priorities meanwhile the Welsh Government must fund local governments more fairly, so councils can deliver the services our communities need and deserve.
Alongside Elin Jones MS and Ben Lake MP, I will push both governments to ensure rural areas like ours get a fairer deal. Together, we can make the case for compassionate, balanced policymaking that protects the most vulnerable and builds a better future for everyone.
In the meantime, its vital that people are supported to claim all the benefits they are entitled to. Age Cymru offers useful advice and guidance for people who are unsure whether they are eligible for Pension Credit or any other benefits.
