Storm Darragh - lessons to learn

Thank you to all of you who cared for each other, and your neighbours as we recently survived the effects of Storm Darragh.

It was great to hear stories of local businesses and individuals who offered places for people to warm up and have a hot drink, and several restaurants extended the opening time to be able to provide warm food to as many people as possible.

Once more we would have been lost without our farmers and rural workers who gave up their time and machinery to open roads, and help the council sustain the county in a difficult time for many. Many thanks also to all the electrical engineers who worked extensive hours in extremely challenging and dangerous circumstances to restore our electricity provision as quickly as possible.

By the fifth day of the crisis, still over 50 Ceredigion villages were without electricity, and Ben Lake MP and I worked diligently on social media to co-ordinate a list of effected villages, and ensure that the electricity companies were aware of the scale of the problem and areas needing urgent assistance. Our county councillors also worked in their communities to ensure that the most vulnerable people were receiving the support they needed.

Despite surviving Storm Darragh, there are a number of lessons we need to learn from the situation. It is clear that more investment is needed in the infrastructure to make it more resilient to weather storms in the future. But the most important lesson is that when damage of this scale occurs, electricity providers need to bring significant resources faster to rural areas to try to repair sooner.
